7 Simple Rules for Reducing Food Waste
Reduce your food waste by following these 7 simple rules…
Food Rotation - date foods and use a simple rotation of FIRST IN FIRST OUT.
Keep your food storage space cool, dry and well ventilated. There is some evidence that for every 10 degree rise in temperature food shelf life is halved.
Use airtight containers to store food in and if possible exclude sunlight.
Store to reduce risk of pests and cross contamination. Store food at least 20cm's off the floor, at first sign of pests start cleaning and looking for the source! If you have large quantities of dry goods such as pasta, rice and flours consider freezing what you do not immediately need to preserve freshness and protect from pests. Never store food and chemicals together.
Use food safe containers to store food in.
Keep your food storage areas clean and well maintained, spills and leaks can attract unwanted visitors.
Get creative with those odd ingredients in the pantry and use them up rather than throwing them out.
Finally food waste sent to landfill creates huge amounts of Methane as it rots rather than decomposing properly. If you have organic waste feed it to chickens or compost it rather than dispose of in the landfill bin.
